Shape what comes next

By joining our team, you’ll have the opportunity to reshape how the world learns and applies skills—and help millions of people participate in the new economy. Bring your ideas, expertise, and perspective to meaningful work that can make a difference at global scale.

Job Overview:

The Design & Research teams play a crucial role in Coursera's success by gathering learner and educator insights and translating them into recommendations that help Coursera achieve a seamless experience across its platform. As a Staff Product Designer, you will lead the design strategy and execution for a major product area. You'll partner closely with Product, Engineering, Research, and Data Science across multiple teams to shape scalable experiences that drive meaningful outcomes for millions of learners and customers.

This role requires creating clarity from ambiguity, influencing product direction, and transforming complex challenges into simple, elegant, and inclusive solutions. As Coursera and Udemy come together to redefine how the world learns, this work sits at the center of our platform strategy. We're also looking for designers who embrace AI as part of their design practice—using it to accelerate exploration, synthesize insights, prototype ideas, and improve the quality and speed of design decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design vision, strategy, and execution for a major product area — shaping its strategic direction while ensuring design quality and craft excellence across every stage of the product lifecycle.
  • Define and navigate ambiguous, complex problem spaces while leveraging insight across customer, business, and operational areas to frame initiatives and drive a strategic point of view.
  • Partner closely with product managers, engineers, researchers, and data scientists to design and ship experiences that scale across the catalog.
  • Design new functionality within existing systems, and drive the definition of new patterns and formats as the space evolves.
  • Partner with research and data leads to synthesize quantitative and qualitative insights into cohesive, actionable design recommendations that shape product direction.
  • Apply AI fluently as part of the craft itself — using AI tools to accelerate discovery, ideation, prototyping, and iteration — while exercising sound judgment about where AI assistance helps versus where it shortcuts thinking that shouldn't be a shortcut.
  • Communicate design rationale effectively to influence cross-functional and senior stakeholders, and mentor designers across pods to raise the bar for craft and storytelling.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7-9 years of experience as a UX or Product Designer, with a portfolio demonstrating end-to-end ownership of complex solutions across one or multiple product areas.
  • Experience with core UX methods — including facilitating workshops, conducting user research, synthesizing insights, creating user flows, defining information architecture, and producing wireframes and prototypes — with a track record guiding teams from discovery through delivery.
  • Experience with interaction and visual design, including leveraging and contributing to design systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to design responsive, mobile-first experiences informed by user research and data insights.
  • Proficiency in design and collaboration tools such as Figma and FigJam.
  • Working fluency with AI tools in the design process (e.g., using AI for research synthesis, concept generation, rapid prototyping, or content drafting), with the judgment to know when not to use them.
  • Demonstrated history of communicating design rationale to influence cross-functional partners, and mentoring other designers to raise the bar for design quality.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing AI-driven or agentic products, including prompt-based interactions and best practices for human-AI collaboration.
  • Experience designing for consumer SaaS, enterprise, or EdTech platforms.
  • Track record of using AI tools to change how you work (not just what you ship) — e.g., building lightweight prototypes or internal tools with AI assistance to test ideas faster.
  • Passion for education, learning transformation, and Coursera's mission to make world-class learning accessible to everyone.
