Job description

This is a Staff Engineer role for a highly experienced software engineer who combines deep hands-on engineering expertise with strong system design skills. The ideal candidate contributes to architecture reviews and technical decisions, drives engineering excellence, influences technical strategy, and mentors senior engineers while remaining actively involved in software development.

The role also involves close collaboration with Product Managers and other stakeholders to shape product direction, translate business and product needs into scalable technical solutions, and contribute to product strategy and roadmap decisions. The Staff Engineer is expected to act as a technical partner to product leadership, helping balance customer value, business priorities, technical feasibility, and long-term maintainability.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Build and enhance frontend components using React, ensuring a seamless and performant user experience.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver high-quality, maintainable software solutions.
  • Architect and implement RESTful APIs and integrations between backend and frontend systems.
  • Leverage AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, CloudFront) for application deployment, monitoring, and scalability.
  • Ensure application performance, security, and reliability across the stack.
Contribute to architecture reviews and technical decisions, applying system design principles to improve the system, while collaborating with architects on the overall architectural direction.
  • Lead the design of complex, cross-functional systems and ensure architectural consistency.
  • Partner with Engineering Managers and Product Leadership to shape long-term technical strategy.
  • Identify and resolve system-wide technical risks, bottlenecks, and scalability challenges.
  • Drive engineering best practices, coding standards, and software quality initiatives.
  • Lead technical design reviews and provide guidance for high-impact engineering decisions.
  • Influence technology selection, platform evolution, and modernization initiatives.
  • Balance short-term delivery goals with long-term platform sustainability.

Requirements:

  • Strong hands-on experience with React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks.
  • Proficiency in AWS services and cloud architecture (infrastructure, deployment, monitoring).
  • Solid understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems.
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and ORM frameworks (e.g., Hibernate).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure as code (Terraform or CloudFormation).
  • Ability to translate complex business needs into technical solutions.
  • Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills.
  • 8–10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong hands-on expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
  • Proven experience leading technical initiatives across multiple teams or products.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence engineering decisions without direct people management responsibility.
  • Experience driving engineering standards and technical governance.
  • Strong track record of mentoring senior engineers and growing technical capability within engineering organizations.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with frontend performance optimization and state management (Redux, or similar).
  • Familiarity with non-relational databases (MongoDB, DynamoDB).
  • Knowledge of messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools (CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana).
  • Experience defining engineering roadmaps and platform strategy.
  • Experience leading architecture modernization initiatives.
  • Experience working in organizations with Staff/Principal Engineer career ladders.
  • Contributions to engineering communities, open-source projects, or technical conferences are a plus.

We offer*:

  • Flexible working format - remote, office-based or flexible
