The opportunity

You will be a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer at Tools and Support of Hitachi Energy HVDC Sweden. Responsible for the development, improvement, and optimization of installation tools and testing equipment used across various Hitachi HVDC sites and manufacturing locations.

The role focuses on applying engineering principles to design, develop, and implement robust, safe, and efficient tools and test solutions that support manufacturing, installation, and verification activities. You will work to improve usability, reliability, and standardization while contributing to increased efficiency and reduced costs.

You will collaborate closely with a small, specialized team covering different technical areas, where your ideas, technical judgement, and ability to challenge and improve existing solutions are highly valued.

This role is based in Ludvika, Sweden.

How you’ll make an impact

  • Design, develop, and implement new manufacturing processes, equipment, and layouts with the aim of supporting efficient, safe, and sustainable production while reducing waste.
  • Review and assess existing manufacturing processes to identify areas for improvement in cost efficiency, quality, and overall performance.
  • Conduct time studies, process mapping, and value stream mapping to optimize workflow and resource utilization.
  • Collaborate closely with R&D
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously refine process documentation, including work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and control plans.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Implement and maintain lean manufacturing principles (e.g., 5S, Kaizen, Six Sigma) to encourage continuous improvement and shared learning.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate manufacturing technologies, tools, and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, quality standards, and environmental policies.
  • Train, guide, and support production staff in new processes and equipment, contributing to knowledge sharing and confidence in day‑to‑day operations.

Your background

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related fields.
  • Several years of experience in a project engineering role, preferably within a large-scale manufacturing environment.
  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, assembly, fabrication, and automation.
  • Experience with Siemens NX, or other comparable CAD tools (e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD), and process simulation tools.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement approaches, as well as quality management systems such as ISO 9001.
  • A practical and curious mindset, with the ability to understand challenges and contribute to effective, sustainable solutions.
  • Comfortable communicating and collaborating with colleagues across different functions and teams.
  • Ability to manage priorities, contribute to projects in a structured way, and work fluently in Swedish with professional proficiency in English.
