The Mechanical Staff Engineer provides technical expertise in the design and fabrication of mechanical assemblies that support new product development, working cross-functionally with hardware, software, commercialization, R&D, and manufacturing teams to deliver innovative, compliant, and manufacturable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design & Product Development

  • Design mechanical assemblies using machined, sheet-metal, and injection-molded components, with consideration for fabrication methods, manufacturability, and production requirements.
  • Create detailed fabrication drawings for parts and assemblies using CAD tools.
  • Communicate design specifications with suppliers and coordinate prototype part procurement.
  • Build prototypes of newly designed systems and support product introduction into manufacturing.
  • Develop training materials, documentation, and fixtures to support manufacturing readiness.

Manufacturing & Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, including assembly documentation, equipment specification, installation activities, and budget/time estimation.
  • Collaborate with R&D engineers to ensure compliance requirements are met and product transitions are executed smoothly.
  • Support procurement activities related to part obsolescence and supply chain challenges.
  • Assist documentation control with engineering change requests (ECRs) and engineering change notices (ECNs).
  • Contribute to manufacturing objectives through effective collaboration across teams.

AI-Enabled Engineering

  • Demonstrate the ability and willingness to leverage AI tools to improve productivity, decision-making, work quality, and cost efficiency.
  • Identify appropriate AI use cases within engineering workflows.
  • Critically evaluate AI-generated outputs to ensure accuracy, quality, and suitability.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a similar discipline (required).
  • Minimum of 6 years of related experience in mechanical design and fabrication.

Technical Qualifications

  • Strong working knowledge of machined parts, sheet metal design, and material selection.
  • Knowledge of cryogenic and vacuum systems, including materials used in these applications, is a plus.
  • Proficiency with the SolidWorks suite of products.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong hands-on experience with 3D printing technologies and materials.
  • Good understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Strong hands-on mechanical skills, including the use of hand tools for drilling, cutting, tapping, bending, and similar fabrication activities.
  • Understanding of electromechanical devices and their design and construction.

This role works closely with hardware, software, commercialization, R&D, manufacturing, procurement, and documentation control teams to support new product development and continuous improvement initiatives. The position requires a combination of hands-on engineering, technical problem-solving, supplier interaction, and cross-functional collaboration.
