The successful teacher will need to be confident teaching students across a range of abilities. You will be expected to challenge high-performing students while providing clear explanations and appropriate support for students who find aspects of Mathematics more difficult.

The department has a clear focus on developing mathematical understanding rather than simply teaching students how to follow procedures.

Maths Teacher - School Information

The school is an Outstanding School in Croydon with high expectations for academic achievement, behaviour and personal development.

The school provides a structured and purposeful learning environment where students are encouraged to work hard and take pride in their progress.

Mathematics is a central part of the curriculum and the department is committed to ensuring students develop the knowledge and confidence needed to succeed at GCSE and beyond.

The school benefits from a collaborative teaching culture. Staff work together on curriculum planning, assessment and intervention, while experienced teachers provide support to colleagues at earlier stages of their careers.

Students are encouraged to become increasingly independent mathematicians who can apply their knowledge to unfamiliar problems.

Maths Teacher - The Role

You will be responsible for:

  • Teaching Maths across KS3 and KS4

  • Preparing students for GCSE Mathematics

  • Teaching KS5 Mathematics where appropriate

  • Supporting students who require additional intervention

  • Differentiating lessons appropriately

  • Using assessment effectively

  • Sharing resources and teaching strategies

  • Maintaining high expectations of behaviour

At KS3, you will help students develop secure foundations in areas including number, algebra, geometry, statistics and ratio.

At KS4, you will prepare students for the demands of GCSE Mathematics, ensuring they can apply their knowledge to increasingly complex and unfamiliar questions.

Where appropriate, KS5 teaching may include A-Level Mathematics and potentially Further Mathematics.

The successful candidate should therefore have strong mathematical knowledge and be comfortable teaching beyond GCSE if required.

Maths Teacher - Teaching and Learning

The school is looking for a teacher who can make Mathematics accessible without making it simplistic.

Lessons should encourage students to explain their reasoning, identify errors and consider different approaches to solving problems.

You will need to use questioning effectively and check understanding regularly.

The successful teacher will also understand that students can make mistakes as part of the learning process and should create a classroom environment where students are willing to attempt challenging problems.

Assessment will be used to identify gaps and inform future teaching rather than simply record grades.

Maths Teacher - Experience and Qualifications

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • A degree in Mathematics or a closely related subject

  • Experience teaching Mathematics at secondary level
