Interdisciplinary Systems Engineer, ECAD, Configuration Management
$151.2K–204.6KActive
Job description
Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
We are seeking a software-fluent ECAD Interdisciplinary Systems Engineer to join the Engineering Practice & Configuration Management team. This role mirrors the mechanical domain's custom tooling function-you will build the integration tooling and automation that connects EE design systems (Xpedition, EDM, Teamcenter) into a seamless, reliable configuration management backbone.
You will build the connective tissue between EE's core design systems—Xpedition, EDM, and Teamcenter—creating intelligent automation for IDX exchanges, component synchronization, and BOM reconciliation that eliminates manual handoffs and scales with the program. This will result into a world-class tooling velocity and cross-system reliability for the EE domain.
Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Key job responsibilities
• Custom Integration Tooling: Design, build, and maintain automation that synchronizes data across Xpedition, EDM, and Teamcenter-keeping the 6000+ part component library dimensionally consistent and properly linked across all systems
• BOM Reconciliation Automation: Build tooling that guarantees Teamcenter BOM, Xpedition BOM, and supply-chain BOMs match at design release; enable where-used analysis; flag missing or dropped components; block PCBA release when parts are out of sync or unreleased
• IDX Exchange Improvement: Automate and harden the ECAD-MCAD collaboration workflow (IDX process); implement the validated scheme file as default configuration; build guardrails that prevent protocol deviations that destroy design history
• Build-to-Design Loop Closure: Pull as-built BOM data from supply-chain systems and contract manufacturer red-lines back into engineering tools, enabling true end-to-end data accuracy
• Component Dimensional Integrity Tooling: Build automated verification that detects and prevents dimensional mismatches of component definition between EDM and Teamcenter to enable identification PCBA-to-enclosure fitment failures in CAD and before fabrication
• Release Workflow Automation: Develop release gates and automated checks that enforce component maturity requirements, BOM consistency, and data completeness before PCBA release approval
• Tooling Backlog Ownership: Maintain and prioritize the EE tooling backlog (mirroring mechanical's 47+ item backlog); partner with the EE Configuration Manager to identify highest-impact automation opportunities
• Cross-Domain Integration: Ensure EE tooling integrates cleanly with existing in-house designed mechanical tooling infrastructure for unified cross-domain workflows
• Developer Documentation: Maintain technical documentation for all custom tooling, APIs, and integrations to ensure sustainability and team knowledge transfer
A day in the life
You will be responsible to work across multiple engineering functions to understand the daily pain points of a responsible engineering and translating those into the custom ECAD tools for EE domain.
About the team
The Configuration Management team develops and governs the engineering systems, standards, and processes that ensure spacecraft design data remains accurate, traceable, and controlled throughout the product lifecycle. While the organization originated as a traditional design support function, it has evolved into the engineering authority for product data management and engineering configuration.
The team defines how engineering information flows throughout the digital engineering environment, including Product Lifecycle Management workflows, mechanical and electrical design tool integration, engineering data management, and the interaction between Teamcenter, Siemens NX, Mentor, and other engineering platforms. They also develop tooling and automation that improves engineering productivity while maintaining data integrity across these systems.
In addition to managing engineering data, the organization serves as the company's subject matter experts in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. They develop engineering standards, mentor design engineers, and promote best practices that improve drawing quality, manufacturability, and technical consistency across the organization.
The team also defines and continuously improves the organization's configuration and change management processes for hardware, requirements, and engineering documentation. They work closely with software organizations to strengthen integrated hardware and software configuration control while ensuring traceability throughout the development lifecycle. Today the organization facilitates Engineering Change Committee and Configuration Control Board activities while actively developing increasingly automated workflows in partnership with the Engineering Information Systems team. These efforts continue moving the organization toward a more efficient, data driven approach to engineering governance.
- 5+ years of experience in engineering tooling development, PLM integration, or ECAD systems administration
- Proficiency in software development (Python, Java, or C#) with demonstrated ability to build production-quality automation tools
- Hands-on experience with PLM/PDM system APIs (Teamcenter SOA/RAC preferred)
- Experience with ECAD tools and data formats (Mentor/Siemens Xpedition preferred; familiarity with EDM component library management)
- Understanding of PCBA design workflows, BOM structures, and engineering release processes
- Familiarity with IDX (Incremental Design Exchange) workflows between ECAD and MCAD systems
- Experience with NX/Teamcenter integration and NX Open API
- Track record of building cross-system data synchronization solutions in engineering environments
- Experience with CI/CD practices for engineering tool deployment
- Knowledge of manufacturing BOM formats and contract manufacturer data exchange requirements
- Experience in aerospace, satellite, or high-reliability electronics manufacturing environments
- Demonstrated Amazon's Leadership Principles, particularly Invent and Simplify, Bias for Action, and Deliver Results
