Job description
Description
INTECH Process Automation is seeking a seasoned Instrument Engineer to join our Operations & Maintenance (O&M) team. The Instrument Engineer shall provide field engineering and maintenance support for instrumentation and control systems within the assigned scope, ensuring safe, reliable and compliant execution of maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, replacement, installation, configuration, loop checking and functional testing activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, coordinate and execute preventive and corrective maintenance for pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical, vibration, position, density, interface, water-cut, metering and other field instruments.
- Review Work Orders, P&IDs, loop drawings, hook-up drawings, datasheets, tag information, hazardous-area classifications, maintenance history and applicable procedures before field activities.
- Perform and review instrument calibration, configuration, loop checking and functional testing, including as-found/as-left results, tolerances, calibration standards and test records.
- Verify complete instrument signal paths between field devices and DCS, SIS, F&G, PLC, RTU/SCADA, HMI and local indication systems, as applicable.
- Configure and troubleshoot smart/HART instruments, including measurement parameters, diagnostics, communication and device status.
- Troubleshoot instrumentation failures, identify failure modes and root causes, and recommend corrective and reliability improvements.
- Maintain and test control valves, shutdown valves, actuated valves and valve accessories, including positioners, I/P converters, solenoids, limit switches, regulators, boosters and partial-stroke devices.
- Perform stroke checks, positioner calibration, feedback verification, solenoid testing, air-leak checks, response testing and partial-stroke testing as applicable.
- Support inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting and functional testing of Wellhead Control Panels (WHCP) and associated shutdown valves, field instruments, control components and RTU/SCADA interfaces.
- Perform maintenance, calibration, bump testing, loop checking and functional testing of Fire & Gas (F&G) field devices, including gas, flame, smoke and heat detectors, manual call points, beacons and sounders.
- Ensure F&G testing is performed using approved test equipment, certified gases and OEM procedures, while properly controlling safety-critical inhibits, bypasses and overrides.
- Maintain and troubleshoot instrument air systems, including compressors where assigned, dryers, receivers, filters, regulators, drains, headers, tubing and pneumatic components.
- Inspect and maintain instrument hook-ups, impulse lines, tubing, manifolds, fittings, supports and weather protection, ensuring correct materials, ratings and installation practices.
- Verify hazardous-area/Ex integrity, including cable glands, earthing, ingress protection, weatherproofing and field installation condition.
- Prepare work packs, calibration records, test sheets, inspection reports and CMMS/Work Order close-out documentation.
- Ensure safety-related instruments and loops are tested in accordance with approved procedures and that bypasses, overrides, inhibits and forces are properly cleared before return to service.
- Support commissioning, start-up, shutdown and reinstatement activities, including loop checks and functional testing.
- Identify recurring failures, poor hook-up conditions and unsuitable instrumentation and provide improvement recommendations and reliability initiatives.
- Coordinate with Operations, Electrical, Mechanical, Control Systems, HSE, vendors and OEMs to resolve technical and maintenance issues.
- Provide technical guidance to Instrument Technicians and junior personnel and ensure work is executed safely and in accordance with the procedures.
Requirements
To Be Successful in This Role, You Must Have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation, Control, Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 7 years of relevant oil & gas, petrochemical or process industry experience, including at least 3 years in an Instrument Engineer or equivalent role.
- Proven experience in field instrumentation maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, loop checking and commissioning.
- Strong knowledge of pressure, temperature, flow and level instruments, smart/HART devices, calibration and metrology.
- Experience with DCS, SIS, F&G, PLC, RTU/SCADA, control and shutdown valves, WHCP and associated field devices.
- Knowledge of instrument air systems, hook-ups, tubing, manifolds and impulse lines.
- Knowledge of hazardous-area/Ex requirements, including IEC 60079.
- Competence in loop checking, functional testing, safety-related instrumentation, troubleshooting and failure analysis.
- Experience with CMMS, Work Order management and technical documentation.
- Ability to support reliability improvement and maintenance optimization activities.
