Overview
ExxonMobil is seeking a Facilities Engineer / Specialist (Intermediate) to join its Project Development team in Baytown, Texas, serving as a Project Manager of Development (PM-D) within the Select and Define phase (Stage 2) of ExxonMobil's Capital Projects Management System (MCAPS). The PM-D will manage a portfolio of four active projects, each in the 6 to 10 million dollar range, for a total estimated cost of approximately 40 million dollars. This individual will be responsible for successful cross functional, integrated, and competitive project performance, assembling and leading project teams, driving concept selection, and taking projects through Gate reviews, while mentoring less experienced project practitioners. This is a minimum one year contract with potential for extension based on performance, with a target start by the end of September.
Responsibilities
- Plan and assemble cross functional project teams and lead them through Gate reviews from Gate 1 through Gate 2, occasionally continuing to support through Gate 3.
- Drive concept selection and optimization activities in partnership with a technical spine of support, including senior discipline experts and step leads.
- Own the Stage 2 project roadmap and schedule, developing the appropriate level of definition to support project goals, timelines, and sound gate decisions.
- Champion project competitiveness through target setting, third party benchmarking, brownfield tool verification, and Front End Loading assessments at the end of Stage 2 and Stage 3.
- Steward project, functional, and discipline specific support, such as fixed equipment, machinery, instrumentation, and electrical, to ensure timely completion of reviews and resolution of technical queries.
- Ensure stakeholder alignment on project objectives, strategies, concept selection, schedule, and cost.
- Run weekly project team meetings and serve as the primary integrator, keeping the team on task against the Stage 2 plan.
- Support the Business Planner during Stage 1 planning, including fact checking scope and flagging technical showstoppers ahead of Gate 1.
- Plan and execute a smooth handover of Stage 2 deliverables to the Project Engineer for Stage 3 (FEED), continuing to support through Stage 3 when competency gaps require it.
- Mentor less experienced project practitioners on the team.
- Manage contractors and provide overall project stewardship throughout Stage 2 execution.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Civil, or Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering specialty, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 5+ years of relevant engineering or project development experience; this is an individual contributor role that produces real project deliverables rather than an advisory or delegation focused position.
- Strong knowledge of discipline design standards, specifications, codes, and applicable safety criteria.
- Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite, including Excel (inserting and deleting rows and columns, basic formulas, and pivot tables) and Outlook (including independently scheduling meetings), with working familiarity with SharePoint.
- Comfortable working onsite and collaborating across time zones via Zoom with team members based in Houston area offices and Bangalore, India.
- Ability to adapt to tight deadlines, heavy workloads, and frequent changes in priorities.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills for technical and business audiences.
- Willingness to be based onsite in Baytown, Texas, with occasional remote or flex days per company policy.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 to 10 years of experience managing similarly complex capital projects.
- Prior process design experience, or working knowledge of process design activities, sufficient to collaborate closely with process design engineers during Stage 2.
