Overview
Milbank is seeking a Docketing Clerk to support the Managing Attorney's Office. The Docketing Clerk will be responsible for docketing court-related documents, calculating and calendaring procedural deadlines, filing court documents, providing guidance to attorneys on court rules and procedures, liaising with court personnel, and other assigned responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Calculate, docket, and calendar procedural deadlines and court dates in the Firm’s centralized docketing system (CourtAlert Case Management), ensuring accuracy and compliance with all applicable court rules.
- Maintain the litigation calendar on an ongoing basis, updating deadlines to reflect new filings, court orders, and other procedural developments.
- Prepare and distribute calendar reports to attorneys and legal assistants, and proactively flag upcoming deadlines.
- Review and maintain case records in the docketing system, including party and judge information, attorney and legal assistant assignments, filings, and deadlines, to ensure ongoing accuracy.
- Monitor case progress, retrieve court filings, decisions, and orders, obtain docket updates, and communicate case status changes to responsible attorneys and legal assistants.
- Complete electronic filings in federal and state courts nationwide.
- Review filings for compliance with court rules and procedures.
- Ensure timely delivery of courtesy copies of filings.
- Advise attorneys and legal assistants on federal and state court rules and procedures.
- Research court rules and procedural requirements in response to attorney inquiries, and prepare clear written summaries of findings.
- Understand and keep abreast of developments to court rules, civil procedure, and judges’ individual practices.
- Conduct searches for court precedent.
- Liaise with court personnel, process servers, and vendors.
- Assist attorneys with federal court and pro hac vice admissions.
- Obtain certificates of good standing from federal and state courts.
- Maintain attorney electronic filing credential database.
- Coordinate service of process with process servers.
- Other responsibilities as they are assigned from time to time.
Compensation
The anticipated base salary range offered for this role will be between $70,000 to $90,000 and represents the firm’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the base compensation range. Actual base compensation will be dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, performance, qualifications, degrees, and location, as well as the needs of the firm.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree required and a minimum of one to two years of relevant experience in a law firm’s Managing Attorney’s Office or docketing department.
- Proficiency in using rules-based docketing software (e.g., CourtAlert, Compulaw, Milana, or equivalent).
- Proficiency in electronic filing using CM/ECF, ACMS, NYSCEF, and the Supreme Court Electronic Filing System.
- Knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP), Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure (FRAP), Federal Rules of Bankruptcy Procedure (FRBP), Rules of the Supreme Court of the United States, New York Civil Practice Law and Rules (CPLR), and other court rules and procedures.
- Knowledge of electronic filing procedures in federal and New York state courts.
- Proficiency in searching and retrieving information from court-related databases (e.g., PACER, NYSCEF, Bloomberg Law, CourtAlert, Westlaw, Lexis, PacerPro) and other online sources of case information.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Exceptional attention to detail, with a demonstrated record of accuracy in deadline calculation and docketing.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent prioritization and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and see projects to completion as well as work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with all levels of firm personnel.
- Ability to work effectively under time pressure.
