Job description

Caretaker - Secondary School - Lincoln (September Start)

Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Dependent on experience

Caretaker

Are you a practical, reliable and hands-on individual who takes pride in maintaining buildings and creating a safe environment for others? A well-established Secondary School in Lincoln is seeking a committed Caretaker to join its premises team on a full-time, permanent basis.

This is an important role within the school and would suit someone with practical maintenance experience who enjoys variety and is comfortable taking responsibility for the day-to-day condition of a busy site.

Working alongside the Premises Manager and senior leadership team, you will help ensure classrooms, offices, corridors, communal areas, grounds and specialist facilities remain safe, functional and well maintained.

Your day will involve a mixture of planned maintenance and responding to issues as they arise. You may begin the morning completing site checks before dealing with a maintenance request from a member of staff, preparing an area for an event or assisting a contractor attending the school.

The successful candidate will need to be practical and willing to get involved. Minor repairs, basic maintenance, moving furniture and preparing rooms will all form part of the role.

You will also assist with the security of the site. This will include opening and securing buildings, checking access points, monitoring gates and doors and reporting any concerns promptly.

School Information

This is an 11 to 18 well-established Secondary School in Lincoln with a strong commitment to high standards, student wellbeing and continuous improvement.

The school serves a diverse community and aims to provide students with a safe, supportive and purposeful environment in which they can learn and develop.

Students are encouraged to become independent and responsible young people, with high expectations around behaviour, attendance and personal development.

The school offers a broad curriculum supported by extracurricular activities and enrichment opportunities.

The premises team plays an important role in ensuring that the school's facilities support this work. A safe and well-maintained site is essential to creating the right environment for both students and staff.

Caretaker - Responsibilities

The successful Caretaker will be responsible for duties including:

  • Carrying out daily checks of school buildings and grounds

  • Completing minor repairs and general maintenance

  • Reporting significant maintenance issues

  • Checking classrooms, corridors and communal areas

  • Monitoring doors, windows, gates and access points

  • Assisting with opening and securing the school

  • Supporting site security procedures

  • Managing deliveries and assisting contractors

  • Preparing rooms for meetings and school events

  • Setting up furniture and equipment

  • Moving furniture when required

  • Monitoring external areas and playgrounds

  • Identifying potential hazards

  • Reporting defects promptly

  • Supporting health and safety checks

  • Maintaining appropriate maintenance records

  • Assisting with planned maintenance

  • Responding to staff maintenance requests

  • Supporting emergency procedures where required

  • Keeping storage and maintenance areas organised

The successful candidate will be expected to use their initiative and prioritise issues according to urgency and potential risk.

Maintenance and Site Responsibilities

The school is looking for someone who is comfortable carrying out practical tasks rather than relying entirely on external contractors.

This could include basic repairs, replacing fittings, assembling equipment, carrying out minor decorating work or dealing with general wear and tear around the site.

Where specialist work is required, you will report the issue to the appropriate person and assist with contractor access and site arrangements.

You will also help maintain the appearance of the school. This includes monitoring communal areas and external spaces and ensuring that issues affecting the presentation of the site are addressed.

Health and Safety

Health and safety will be a key consideration throughout the role.

You will need to identify hazards such as damaged fixtures, blocked access routes, faulty equipment or issues around external areas and report or address them appropriately.

You will also follow school procedures when dealing with contractors, deliveries, maintenance work and emergencies.

The successful candidate should understand that working in a school environment requires particular care because students will be present across the site throughout the day.

Caretaker - Experience and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous Caretaker, Maintenance or Facilities experience

  • Good practical repair and maintenance skills

  • Understanding of basic health and safety procedures

  • Ability to identify hazards and maintenance issues

  • Strong organisational skills

  • Reliable and flexible approach

  • Good communication skills

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to prioritise tasks

  • Professional attitude

  • Commitment to maintaining a safe environment

Previous experience within a school would be advantageous but is not essential where candidates have strong transferable facilities, property maintenance or trade experience.

Working Environment

You will become a familiar and important member of the school community. The role involves regular interaction with teachers, support staff, pupils, visitors and contractors, so you will need to be approachable while maintaining professional boundaries.

The successful candidate will take pride in knowing that their work directly contributes to the school's daily operation. From ensuring classrooms are ready in the morning to resolving maintenance issues during the school day, your work will help create an environment where students and staff can focus on teaching and learning.

This is an excellent permanent opportunity for someone looking for a varied, practical role within a well-established school.

Salary

The salary for this Caretaker position will be dependent on experience.
